:: An introduction to the University of Environment ::
University of Environment (UoE) was established on 1972, as the College of Environment (CoE) by the Iranian Department of Environment (DoE). As the first national centre for environmental education, since its establishment CoE has offered academic training programs in different fields of environmental science and technology (such as environmental pollution, natural resources, civil engineering, recycling) and other disciplines of knowledge such as mining, public relations, tourism management, chemistry, etc. CoE has also been a national hub for providing quality vocational and in-service training programs through workshops, training courses, seminars, field trips, study tours and work based trainings for students, researchers, staff of the Department of Environment, NGOs and other national and regional environmental experts and activists.
Since 1990, CoE has started to train a skilled workforce in the fields of environmental pollution control and prevention for Iran's Department of Environment and currently many of its graduates are absorbed as DoE staff, other governmental agencies, municipalities and industries and during the course of the last few decades have played a crucial role in protecting and conserving the environment. Since March 2005, CoE is run according to the system of procedures of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology under the supervision of a Board of Trustees headed by the Vice President and Head of Iran's Department of Environment. In 2010, the Cabinet meeting ratified upgrading CoE to the University of Environment (UoE) and establishing the National Environmental Research Institute. Up to now, UoE has fostered thousands of experts in different fields of study and currently has an enrolment of more than 1100 fulltime undergraduate students and around 100 postgraduate students in the main campus located in the city of Karaj, the Capital city of the Alborz Province in neighborhood of Tehran and currently UoE has plans to establish new branches in some other provinces of Iran. UoE is currently involved in several national, regional and international projects collaborating with more than 100 experts, mainly focusing on environmental issues and has a great potential (capacity) for cooperation in different research projects.
